Created in partnership with Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS), Close Up’s Civic Voices program for middle schoolers and Civic Leaders program for high schoolers are exciting opportunities for students to practice critical civic literacy skills, work with tutors for academic support, and earn service-learning hours along the way. Students will discuss the issues they care about, develop and practice the skills they need for quarterly assessments and state testing, and follow a curriculum that emphasizes constructed response, reading and writing comprehension, and building citizenship skills and democratic dispositions.

In this free, after-school program, PGCPS students will participate in several one-hour, online sessions over their chosen weeks. They will meet with their assigned group of peers and tutors 2-3 times per week in a 1:4 tutor-to-student ratio. Students will practice critical civic literacy skills while learning more about their community through issues they care about. All program sessions are virtual. Close Up has engaged 2,365 students (1,402 middle school, 963 high school) in PGCPS through the Civic Voices and Civic Leaders programs.

Our programs with PGCPS create community between students and educators. As a program tutor, you’ll have the opportunity to help students find their voice, deliberate and reflect on local government issues, and understand citizenship by using their media and literacy skills.
